A moment of wild enthusiasm for exploration on the part of her crew resulted in Ruda turning her bows west into Lake Mälaren, and from there up the rather small-gauge Hjalemäre Canal to the historic city of Örebro.
Mälaren, in Stockholm’s hinterland, has some of Sweden’s most impressive castles and Ruda enjoyed weathering out a storm moored in front of one of the best, Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, before navigating the shallow, rock-strewn waters of Hjalemären.
