Latvia; Art Nouveau Riga, canoeing and golden sand

Soon Ruda found herself in her 7th European capital; Riga, Latvia’s gorgeous Art Nouveau principal city.

Here she moored in a basin at the end of the old moat of the former fortifications, which now forms a canal through the heart of the city. Our canoe, with its lower air- and water-draft was more suitable for the canal job than was Ruda, who instead enjoyed her views of Riga’s spires and the Vanšu cable bridge from the Daugava River. It has been a busy summer for the canoe which had only just got over a day spent amongst the rapids of the Salac River, passing the famous red sandstone cliffs and extraordinary lamprey weirs on the descent to Salacgrīvas.
